One of the most common questions from first-time bulk beef buyers is how much freezer space they will need. The answer is straightforward, and most families already have or can easily acquire the right setup.
A half beef typically yields 100–120 lbs of packaged, vacuum-sealed meat. As a general rule, plan for roughly one cubic foot of freezer space per 25–30 lbs of packaged beef. That puts a half beef at approximately 4 to 6 cubic feet of dedicated freezer space.
A chest freezer is generally more efficient for bulk beef storage. Cold air stays in when you open a chest freezer, reducing temperature fluctuation. A 7 cubic foot chest freezer comfortably holds a half beef with room for other items. An upright freezer of similar capacity also works — organization is simply more important.
Your Ellison Land & Cattle order arrives vacuum-sealed and individually labeled — roasts, steaks, ground beef, and specialty cuts each in their own package. Vacuum sealing significantly extends shelf life and prevents freezer burn. Packages are flat and stackable, which makes organizing a chest freezer efficient.
A whole beef yields 200–240 lbs and requires 8 to 10 cubic feet. Many families who buy a whole beef use a dedicated 10 cubic foot chest freezer or two smaller units. If you are considering a whole beef, measure your available space before placing your deposit.
